Science, industry and politics come together to discuss on 5 May 2009

Detergents, vaccines, plant breeding: The possible applications for biotechnology are far from exhausted and there are challenges to be overcome using biotechnology in the future. This “Biotechnology for the future conference” on 5 May 2009 therefore focuses on the potentials and opportunities for this technology, particularly for Eastern Germany.

It is, in particular, the health economy, industry and agriculture alongside numerous other branches and sectors that are profiting from the opportunities offered by biotechnology. Experts from science, politics and the economy are therefore discussing the importance of biotechnology for Eastern Germany in Berlin under the slogan 'Biotechnology - the building blocks of life'. This 'Biotechnology for the future conference' on 5 May 2009 is therefore intended to highlight the potentials and challenges in biotechnological applications for Eastern Germany. The future field of biotechnology is a central key to the further economic and structural development of the new states of Germany.

The close meshing of science and economy is an example of its success thus far in the east of Germany. This basis permits a rapid transfer of scientific knowledge into economic applications and consequently in productive use. The aim of the conference is to open up new routes for the further development of these potentials in the research so that the new states can achieve international heights in the research and application of biotechnology. The question as to what contribution the field of biotechnology can have in the further economic development of the east of Germany will also be discussed.

Wolfgang Tiefensee, the Federal Minister for transport, construction and urban development and the Federal Government's commissioner for the new federal states, will give a keynote speech discussing what has already been achieved and initiatives for the future. Professor Dr. Stefan Hell from the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen will be discussing new experimental possibilities in biotechnology under the title 'Sharpness without limits - optical microscopy for biotechnology for the 21st century'.

The conference is one of the series of conferences on 'Future developments in Eastern Germany' started by Wolfgang Tiefensee in 2008. The conference will be announcing and discussing new and innovative developments in the economy, society and research. VDI Technologienzentrum GmbH, which has also put together an associated study regarding the forward-looking conference, is responsible for the content of the 'Biotechnology for the future conference'. The initial results of the 'Opportunities for biotechnology for East Germany' study will be published at the conference.
